Jeep Cherokee

by Nits

The 2009 Jeep Cherokee is a midsize SUV that comes in four trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland and the SRT8. The first three are available with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, while the SRT8 is available in all-wheel drive only.

The standard engine on the Laredo is a 3.7-liter V6 engine that’s good for 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. Optional on the Laredo and standard on the Limited is a 4.7-liter V8 that generates 305 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. Optional on the Limited four-wheel drive and standard on the Overland is a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that creates 357 horses and 389 lb-ft of torque. Optional on all trims but the high performance SRT8 is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel CRD V6 engine that musters 215 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque.

For safety, Jeep has endowed its new Cherokee with standard side curtain airbags with a roll-detection system, antilock disc brakes and stability control. On Overland models, the stability control system includes trailer sway control. The same feature is optional on the Laredo and Limited.

Taking into account the Jeep Cherokee’s all-terrain capabilities, its performance on the pavement is surprisingly good. Handling is excellent and the steering is quick and precise. When driven off the road, the Cherokee is an absolute power house capable of surmounting any obstacle along the trail.
