Eye surgery, also referred to as ocular surgery or orogolomistician surgery, is a type of surgical procedure performed on the eye or any of its parts.  The procedure is normally done by a seasoned general ophthalmologist. However, in more intricate procedures, it may require the expertise of one who is fellowship trained.

Among our five major senses, the eyes are perhaps the most important. It is also the one that suffers from a number of diseases and disorders over time. Fortunately, eye surgery has seen remarkable progress in the past few years and more people are now availing of new eye surgery procedures to correct or improve their vision as well as their appearance.

There are currently a number of eye surgery procedures which include laser eye surgery, glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery, corneal surgery, refractive surgery, eye muscle surgery, vitreo-retinal surgery and oculoplastic sugery to name a few. Among the various types, Lasik eye surgery is probably the most popular nowadays. It is a form of refractive eye surgery which involves the removal and reshaping of the cornea to correct eyesight. The entire procedure is relatively short, lasting anywhere between 20 to 50 seconds. It is popular among patients who want to get rid of their glasses or contact lenses.

Oculoplastic surgery, or oculoplastics has also been a boon. It deals with the reconstruction of the eye or its adnexa. It is increasingly being done for aesthetic purposes as oculoplastic surgeons are perform more and more procedures that require the repair of droopy eyelids as well as facial rejuvenation procedures such as eye lifts, brow lifts, and even facelifts.
