Bonbonniere

by Nits

Bonbonniere is actually a French word that pertains to a small container stuffed with bonbons which were made of gold, porcelain, precious stones, or crystal and were mixed with sugar cubes. Over time, sugar-coated almonds were used instead of the traditional sugar cubes.

It has been a long standing tradition to offer bonbonnieres to guests as a token of gratitude for their presence on a very special occasion. The typical bonbonniere is normally made with lace or tulle and crafted as a small box embellished with flowers and ribbons. As a rule, the number sugar-coated almonds should be uneven, usually five are included, with each piece representing a wish for health, happiness, fertility, longevity and wealth. By giving them to the guests, the bride and groom are said to enjoy a marriage filled with all these blessings.

Nowadays, there are plenty of online shops offering a wide variety of exclusive bonbonniere ideas that are specifically designed in keeping with the wedding’s theme. They usually double up as place cards or can feature a thank you tag instead. While bonbonnieres are not as important as say, the wedding cake, they make great wedding souvenirs for a lasting memory of your wedding. There is simply nothing more pleasing than leaving a wedding reception with a net pouch filled with almonds or dragees.
